Come visit the Slater Park carousel – the oldest Looff “stander” carousel in the world. This historic carousel contains 50 animals, 2 chariots and features a turntable moving at 9 miles per hour.

The Slater Park Looff Carousel was built in 1895 and was originally located in a carnival called Lee Funland in upstate, New York. The timing is undetermined but in the years to follow, as some historians tell it, that John H. Walker, a carousel concessionaire for Looff, placed a machine in Roger Williams Park in Providence. It was a very successful operation until Walker became unhappy with the city and moved the carousel to Pawtucket in 1910. He was leased a small lot adjacent to the Daggett House where he constructed a ten sided pavilion. Slater Park’s carousel is one of six to remain in that same pavilion for over 100 years.
The carousel is only one of six carousels in the country that is still in it’s original building; a twelve -sided building in the Looff style with a cupola and original stained glass windows made of Sandwich Glass. The stationary carousel is made up of 44 horses, 3 dogs, 1 lion, 1 camel, 1 giraffe, and two chariots. A band organ built in 1909 by the North Tonawanda Musical Instrument Works was purchased in 1996 and completes the carousel. The carousel was named the National Historic Carousel of the Year 2018 by the National Carousel Association.
