BLACKSTONE VALLEY TOURISM COUNCIL END
SUCCESSFUL SEASON ON THE RIVER
Free Sundays on the River Help Boost
Number of Passengers aboard Blackstone Valley Explorer
Pawtucket, RI With an increase of over
500 passengers aboard the Blackstone Valley Explorer and 50 overnight
stays aboard the Samuel Slater Canal Boat, the Blackstone Valley Tourism
Council announces a successful season touring the Blackstone River for
2007.
The Blackstone Valley Tourism Council
operates 3 riverboats in Rhode Island; and due to more visitor
familiarity of the Blackstone Valley, good weather conditions and little
flooding along the river made this season particularly successful.
According to Patricia McAlpine,
Blackstone River Education Coordinator, the Citizens Bank Foundation
sponsored Free Sundays on the River contributed greatly by giving
residents in the surrounding communities the opportunity to experience
the Blackstone River for the first time as well as encouraging
first-time visitors to explore the Blackstone River.
In addition, 3000 school children
participated in RiverClassroom programs aboard the Blackstone Valley
Explorer thanks in part with scholarship assistance from the following
local businesses:
- Bristol County Savings Bank
- Collette Tours
- Central Falls Credit Union
- Helping Hands of Pawtucket
- Cadillac Mills, LLC
- & City of Pawtucket Community
Development Block Grant
The Spirit of the Blackstone, a
six-passenger pontoon boat, also provided opportunities for the
physically challenged to view the Waterfires in Providence.
