Blackstone Valley Tourism Council is pleased to offer high quality, inquiry-based education programs.
These programs will complement your students’ classroom learning experience. Contact us or read below to find out how our programs meet your curriculum needs.

Programs are offered in the classroom and on board the Riverboat Explorer.

River-in-the-Classroom


We can customize our programs to meet your teaching objectives. Book any one of the in classroom programs with a River Science Investigation or Heritage Exploration and save. Package Fee: $300

Discover the Blackstone! (K-12)

An informative classroom experience and introduction to the historical and natural features of the Blackstone River. Slideshow and discussion.


Watershed Investigation (grades 3-12)

Explore the Blackstone River ecosystem through a classroom-based tour of the Blackstone River Watershed. The investigation builds on the introductory program above and includes hands-on activities about river ecology, water quality, and effect human development has had on the watershed.


Eco-Industrial Legacy (grades 5-12)

This multidisciplinary program examines the development of “America’s hardest working river”, the first polluted river, the Blackstone and efforts to revitalize it. Through activities students learn how cultural and natural history are connected and what actions we can take to keep the river clean.


Views of the Valley (grades 6-12)

Adapted from Dunn Foundation’s ViewFinders Too, this interactive program enhances student relationships with their heritage and local environment. One-day teacher workshops available to present the eight-week classroom curriculum.

PRICING:
$150 per hour - $200 for two hours
(within 25 miles of Pawtucket, RI)
Outside of 25 mile radius, additional travel fees apply.

Blackstone Valley Explorer Programs


Eco-Discovery (Grades 9 - Adult)

The Eco-Discovery Program is a two-hour program. The program’s content and activities are based on grade level and curriculum needs. Topics may include water chemistry, water cycle, weather, riparian habitat, local history. Students will:

  • explore the diversity of the river’s ecosystem
  • discover links between people and the river
  • interact in small groups

Program includes tour aboard the Explorer and activities
Program Length:  2 hours • Fee:$350
Program Maximum: 35 including teachers & chaperones


River Science Investigation (RSI) (K-Adult)

Students will:

  • learn about the ecosystem of the river
  • perform grade-appropriate water testing and analyze results
  • observe and identify species of plants and animals
  • recognize pollution and what actions we can take to keep the river clean

Program Length: 50 minutes • FEE: $200.00
Program Maximum: 35 including teachers & chaperones


Heritage Exploration (All Grades) 

Students will observe and hear about:

  • the Blackstone River, site of America’s Industrial Revolution
  • the mills along “America’s hardest working river”
  • pioneers of the river valley, including Native Americans, William Blackstone and the immigrants that came to the valley and how they shaped the local community

Program Length: 50 minutes • Fee: $200.00
Program Maximum: 48 including teachers & chaperones


Wild about Wetlands (All Grades)

Students will learn and discover:

  • the diverse habitat of a wetland
  • impact of weather and floods and the role of wetlands as flood busters
  • wetlands as natural filters

This program can be offered as a walk, a boat trip or a combination.

Wetland Walk: Field observations and data collection at Lonsdale Marsh
Program Length: 45 minutes
Fee: $100.00

Explorer Boat Tour: Meet at Central Falls Landing.
Program Length:
50 minutes • FEE: $200.00

Combination Boat/Walk: Meet at Central Falls Landing. The Explorer will drop off students at Lonsdale Habitat Restoration area where busses can pick up students after the 75-minute program.

From Route 146, turn onto Route 123 east to Valley Falls,take right onto Broad Street, right onto Madeira Avenue
and a right into the parking lot.

Market Square
For Mapquest/GPS, use 80 River Street
From Route 146A, turn right onto Rt. 104N (Providence St.) at the Beef Barn. Follow signs to Visitor Center.

RiverClassroom Scholarships provide students from economically disadvantaged
communities an opportunity to participate in a RiverClassroom program aboard the
Blackstone Valley Explorer, a 49-passenger riverboat.
