    At this time of year, why not take advantage of the beauty of the season with a winter hike on many of our local trails or stay warm at several cultural events offered throughout the region.


    Tourism Council Looks Forward to Year Ahead
    With new & exciting projects tapped for the year ahead and the opening of the Route 295 Visitor Center, 2006 promises to be a bright year for the Tourism Council!

    Blackstone River State Park Visitor Center Opens...
    There is a new visitor center in the Blackstone Valley! On January 9, Governor Donald L. Carcieri joined state, federal and local officials in celebrating the opening of the new Blackstone River State Park Visitor Center on Route 295 North in Lincoln.

    The Blackstone Valley Tourism Council (BVTC) is currently looking for volunteers to assist in staffing the visitor center. If interested, contact Bob Billington, BVTC President at 401-724-2200.

    Here are a few suggestions to beat those winter blahs:
    • Take an acting class at Mixed Magic Theatre starting Saturday, January 28. Limited 16 people. 401-475- 6675
    • Enjoy some Jazz at Jazz at Chan's. Call for schedule 401-765-1900
    • Warm-up at Slater Mill and participate in some 19th century activities Saturday and Sunday, January 20-21. 401-725-8638
    • Enjoy gypsy music with The Bohemian Quartet at the Blackstone River Theatre, Saturday, January 21. 401-725-9272
    • Visit the Musuem of Work and Culture for Ranger Days and learn about area churches on Sunday, January 29.
    • Or take in a great performance with a choice of plays: Lonesome West at the Gamm Theatre in Pawtucket; Over the River and Through the Woods at Mill River Dinner Theatre in Central Falls; and Prisoner of Second Avenue at Community Players in Pawtucket.
    • For those that yearn for the outdoors, take in a winter hike at RI Audubon's Powder Mill Ledges in Smithfield. If you choose to venture out for a walk on the Blackstone Valley Bike Path, the Valley Breeze reports a recent and exciting sighting of a pair of bald eagles.
