    School is back in session, days have become shorter, and soon the leaves will begin to change. As vactions wind down, arts and entertainment venues return from summer hiatus and fall festivals will soon flourish throughout the Blackstone Valley. What better way to kick off the fall season than by joining us for the Pawtucket Arts Festival (see story below).

    However, as we write this newsletter, our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Please see our article on how one Blackstone Valley organization plans to help.     Experience the Arts in Pawtucket with the

    Celebrate the arts in Pawtucket at the Seventh Annual Pawtucket Arts Festival September 9-25, 2005. Join us for a citywide showcase of visual and performing arts, interactive workshops, music, theater and dance performances.

    Highlights include:

    • Pawtucket: A City in Focus Photo Contest and Awards Ceremony on September 25.
    • Six Nights of Film Mirror Image Film Festival, September 11, 12, 15, 16, 19 & 23 at 6:30pm
    • Family Fun Fest at Slater Mill, September 11, 12-5pm
    • Arts Fest 2005 and Stone Soup Folk Fest/World Music Fest September 17 & 18, 10am- 5pm

    City of Pawtucket Hosts 6th Annual Rhode Island Chinese Dragonboat Races

    The City of Pawtucket will host the 6th Annual Rhode Island Chinese Dragonboat Races and Taiwan Day Festival from 8:00am-5:00pm on the Pawtucket River.

    The race and festival are modeled after the famous Chinese Dragonboat Festivals held around the world. There will also be a celebration of local Asian culture with entertainment coming from Taiwan, food, crafts, Chinese Dragon Boat Rides and River Tours throughout the day. American Red Cross will also be on hand to accept your donations to the Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund. Opening ceremonies will begin at 10:00 am

    The Rhode Island Chinese Dragon Boat Race & Festival is presented by the Taipei Economic & Cultural Office in Boston, MA, the City of Pawtucket and the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council, and the Pawtucket Arts Festival.

    Twentieth Anniversary Celebration - Diamond Hill Hosts Wine & Cheese Reception

    The Tourism Council's Twentieth Anniversary Celebration continues with a Wine & Cheese Reception hosted by the Diamond Hill Vineyard in Cumberland, RI on September 15, 2005 from 5pm-7pm. Cost is $20.00 per person. This is a fundraising event.

    PawSox - GIVE TO A GOOD CAUSE

    The PawSox ask fans to make a donation to the PawSox Charitable Trust at the Verizon Fan Center inside McCoy Stadium or you can mail your contributions, made payable to the PawSox Charitable Trust, to PO Box 2365, Pawtucket, RI 02861. All monies collected will be donated directly to the American Red Cross Hurricane Relief Fund.

    Along with your donations some of our loyal sponsors have agreed to match your generosity. McLaughlin & Moran has agreed to match the first $10,000 & Dunkin' Donuts has agreed to match $5,000 in contributions.

    Fall Festival & Shopping Excursion

    Blackstone Valley Scenic Railway Tours presents their Fall Festival & Shopping Excursion aboard the Providence & Worcester rail on Saturday, October 22, 2005.

    Enjoy the fall foliage as you travel from Cumberland RI through the Blackstone Valley National Heritage Corridor to Putnam, CT in the Quinebaug-Shetucket Heritage Corridor. This 7-hour historically narrated tour will depart at 9:00 am and include a 2 1/2-3 hour stopover in Putnam for its 150th anniversary celebration featuring antiques, gift shops, and restaurants.

    Price: $50 preferred seating, $45 regulart seating and $25 obstructed view seating and children under 16.

    Footsteps in History - Update 122 Sites Signed up to Participate in Columbus Day Weekend Event

    Veronica Cadoppi, Program Coordinator for the Foosteps In History, announces 122 sites throughout the Blackstone Valley have now signed up to participate in this exciting, new Columbus Day Weekend Event: the Blackstone Valley Footsteps in History Preserve America Weekend. More sites are still expected to join.  

    Footsteps in History will highlight the historic, cultural and artistic attributes of the Blackstone River Valley with participating sites open to the public and special events planned for the holiday weekend.     • Monday, September 5 the Museum of Work and Culture will be hosting the 7th annual Labor Day Open House Celebration. This event is a reminder of Woonsocket's first Labor Day celebration on September 4, 1899. Admission will be free all day from 9:30AM until 4:00PM
    • Blackston e Valley Explorer River Tours in Woonsocket@ 1, 2, 3 & 4pm Monday, September 5. Tickets $7.00 Adult, $6.00 Children/Seniors Visitors to the Museum of Work and Culture will receive a $1.00 discount.
    • Stone Soup Coffee House opens 25th Season with a weekend songfest Friday, September 9 and Saturday, September 10. Enjoy the music of local favorites at the Boys & Girls Club in Pawtucket, RI.
    • Gamm Theatre opens 21st Season with award- winning new adaptation of the classic Russian novel "Crime and Punishment" by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Speaking of the Gamm they recently became a member of New England Area Theatre (NEAT), a bargaining unit of the Actors Equity Association.
    • King's Feast celebrates their second anniversary at Hose Company No. 6 in Pawtucket this month.
    • Blackstone River Theatre in Cumberland, RI opens its season on September 16 with music from Sweden.
    • In Woonsocket, Jazz at Chans continues with lively music and Stadium Theatre Performing Arts Center continues to be the centerpiece for theater arts in Northern RI with a broad range of performances from live theater, music, and dance.
