New cash prize for Sustainable Tourism efforts

The Sustainable Tourism Planning and Development Laboratory presents the ARISTA, the Achievement in Rhode Island Sustainable Tourism Award.

The ARISTA is a new recognition to be presented in September of 2009 to an agency, non-governmental organization or business for its project or program demonstrating sustainable tourism practices implemented in Rhode Island.

The purpose of this new prize is "to encourage the use of Sustainable Principles in tourism development here in our state," according to Dr. Robert Billington, Executive Director of the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council and the Tourism Laboratory. "It is an opportunity to remind us that sustainable tourism in Rhode Island is first and foremost about benefiting the residents and resources of Rhode Island."

"This new recognition and a $250.00 cash prize and trophy, will reward those individuals, groups or agencies that work to integrate environmental, social, historical, cultural and economic planning in their tourism development work," said Billington.

Rhode Island Authenticity Earns Star Diamond Award

Rhode Island is a state of many firsts. First to take action against British rule, first synogogue, first successful water-powered cotton mill, and now the Ocean State is the first U.S. state to receive the The American Academy of Hospitality Sciences' prestigious "International Star Diamond Award." The AAHS certifies that Rhode Island is a world-class destination offering some of the best natural beauty, culinary offerings, history and cultural attractions. World class - that's Rhode Island! But don't take our word for it, come see for yourself!
