2006-2007 Tourism Marketing Plan

The Blackstone Valley Tourism Council (BVTC) is the state-designated tourism planning and development agency for Central Falls, Pawtucket, Woonsocket, Cumberland, Lincoln, North Smithfield, Smithfield, Burrillville and Glocester, Rhode Island.

General Policies

Based on the Mission Statement of the Tourism Council, the BVTC markets in conjunction with the Blackstone Valley Chamber of Commerce, the JHC Blackstone Valley National Heritage Corridor Commission, the state of Rhode Island and the tourism district offices of Rhode Island.

Group Tour Development

  • Participate in the National Tour Association Exchange
  • Participate in the American Bus Association Exchange
  • Execute Travel Experience Trade Show
  • Advertise in Group Leader Magazine
  • Advertise in New England Group Tour Planner
  • Continue the Tour of the Week Internet broadcast

International Tour Development

  • Participate in Discover New England Tourism International Trade Summit
  • Advertise in the Rhode Island Vacation Guide
  • Promote Bike Blackstone tours

Domestic Tour Development

  • Advertise in the Massachusetts Getaway Guide
  • Advertise in the Yankee Travel Guide to New England
  • Continue the Blackstone Valley DeTour itineraries
  • Distribute Blackstone Valley Tourism literature to 110 sites in the National Heritage Corridor and Rhode Island Visitor Centers including T F Green
  • Staff Pawtucket Visitor Center
  • Staff Lincoln Visitor Center
  • Maintain comprehensive image file of the Blackstone Valley for public use
  • Develop Itineraries individual visitor to the state of RI
  • Produce the Official Blackstone Valley Visitor Guide in conjunction with the Blackstone Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Valley Breeze.
  • Publish a series of "Blackstone Valley Detours" focusing on the Heritage, Cultural and Environmental resources of the Blackstone Valley

Elderhostel Programs

Develop 10 week long programs based on the educational and experiential opportunities available in the Blackstone Valley

Program Driven Marketing

Promote the Blackstone Valley using products, events and programs such as the Blackstone Valley Polar Express, The Easter Bunny Express, tours of the Blackstone River on the Blackstone Valley Explorer, the Samuel Slater and the Spirit of the Blackstone, the Rhode Island Chinese Dragon Boat Races and Taiwan Day Festival, Rhode Island Rivers Day and specialized tours using the Blackstone Valley Shuttle.

Promote the Blackstone Canoe Trail

Promote and develop the Blackstone Valley Footsteps in History Preserve America program
Develop the Voluntourism programs in conjunction with ResponsibleTravel.com

Public Relations

  • Develop a comprehensive public relations program for the Blackstone Valley of Rhode Island and the Blackstone Valley National Heritage Corridor
  • Collect event information from the Blackstone Valley for publication.
  • Produce Events of the Week media releases on a weekly basis.
  • Produce Quarterly Event Calendar
  • Local Community Support
  • Support the Tour Rhode Island, there's no place like home event

The Blackstone Valley Tourism Council has served Rhode Island and the Blackstone Valley National Heritage Corridor since 1985 with sustainable Geo-tourism programs that support residents and enhance the character, environment, culture, heritage, aesthetics and businesses of the Valley.
