Bob Dylan Kicks off Eighth Annual Pawtucket Arts Festival
Bob Dylan and his band kicks off the Eighth Annual Pawtucket Arts Festival this evening at 5:30pm at McCoy Stadium.

The Pawtucket Arts Festival is a citywide showcase of visual and performing arts, interactive workshops, music, theater and dance. Highlights will include:

  • Festival Gala- Friday, September 8 at the Pawtucket Armory, 172 Exchange Street from 6-9pm featuring Comedian Charlie Hall and Music by the Gnomes.
  • Seventh Annual Rhode Island Chinese Dragonboat Race & Taiwan Day Festival - Saturday, September 9 (see article)..
  • Family Fun Fest at Slater Mill - Sunday September 10, 2006 featuring music by Slippery Sneakers Zydeco Band.
  • Arts Fest 2006 and Stone Soup Folk Fest - Saturday, September 16 & Sunday, September 17 at Slater Memorial Park.

Summer may be coming to an end, but there are still plenty of outdoor activities and exciting events throughout the Blackstone Valley including the eighth annual Pawtucket Rhode Island Arts Festival August 24-September 17, 2006.


  • Seventh Annual Chinese Dragonboat Race & Taiwan Day Festival Draws Crowds to Pawtucket's Waterfront
  • The 7th Annual Rhode Island Chinese Dragon Boat Race/Taiwan Day Festival takes place this year on Saturday, September 9, 2006 at the State Pier (off School St.) in Pawtucket, RI. Deemed "the heavyweight champion of the Pawtucket Arts Festival" in a recent article of the Pawtucket Times, you will enjoy a full day of cultural activities as teams of all abilities race in 52' authentic Taiwan- constructed dragon boats on a 1,000' course on the Seekonk River.

    It's not too late to register a team. Dragon boats, paddles, a drum, a team tent, training time, and personal flotation devices, as well as T-shirts, hats, pizza lunch, are provided for teams. Teams require 20 paddlers, a drummer, and a steerer. The Dragon Boat Races run from 8:00am to 5:00pm, with winning teams in each of three classes receiving cash prizes.

  • Blackstone Valley Explorer Cruises in Woonsocket
  • Beginning this Sunday, August 27, 2006 through Sunday, October 29, 2006 enjoy the Thundermist Tour of Woonsocket, RI aboard the Blackstone Valley Explorer. These tours depart hourly between 1-4 pm from Woonsocket Landing, located in Market Square, near the Museum of Work & Culture. Tickets are $8/adults and $6/seniors and children. A discount of $1/off will be offered to anyone with a receipt from the Museum of Work and Culture.

    Along this stretch of the river, passengers will experience historical, architectural, as well as scenic views between the Thundermist Dam and the state border in Blackstone, which will be highlighted with guided interpretation. In late September through October delight in the seasonal changes along the river with a breathtaking fall foliage trip.   • Blackstone Valley Communities Hosting Unique Canoes
  • Bring the family, bring a friend. Come find the canoes on the Blackstone Canoe Trail. Eighteen uniquely painted canoes are located within the communities of the Blackstone Valley, and whoever finds the most canoes will be eligible to win a brand new canoe. Though the canoes are not physically on the river, they make up a trail that travels from Millbury, Sutton, Whitinsville and Mendon in Massachusetts and south into Rhode Island, where canoes are located in Woonsocket, Burrillville, Cumberland, Lincoln, Smithfield and Pawtucket. Deadline for photo entries is Tuesday, October 31st.

  • Book on Cumberland's History Released
  • The Town of Cumberland announces the release of a revised edition of Cumberland by the Blackstone, a historical narrative of Cumberland, RI. First released in 1997 as part of the Town of Cumberland's 250th anniversary, the book features stories and photographs about town history, villages and community landmarks. Written by Joyce A. Hindle Koutsogiane, Ed.D. and David W. Balfour, the book can be purchased at the Blackstone Valley Visitor Center in Pawtucket from 9am-5pm daily. Books will also be available at the following locations:
