What’s so great about dynamites?
The color, the texture, the taste, and oh, the memories …

Here are quotes from some of the contestants in the Sept. 15 Great Dynamite Cook Off, sponsored by the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council, taken from the forms they filled out to enter the contest.

“What I find so special about dynamites is that everybody has an opinion on what actually makes a real dynamite! I very rarely have had one that I don’t like, but I believe there is a secret to adjusting the spices just right!” – Linda Miller, of Moon’s Restaurant, Cumberland.

“I quickly learned from mom that making dynamites is more of an art than a science. I can’t ever make a batch without thinking of her, especially as the unmistakable aroma evokes olfactory memories, filling the kitchen with scenes of childhood, of comfort, and of home.” -- Elizabeth Coderre, North Smithfield.

“As my Grandmother used to say, ‘the secret ingredient is love.’” – Kathleen Rancourt, Whitinsville.

“We were serving dynamites at our snack bar during a hockey tournament one year, and a team from New York loved our dynamites. When they returned the following year for the same tournament, one of the players kept asking us for our sandwich that sounded like a ‘disaster.’” – Ronnie Dumas, of Uncle Ronnie’s Red Tavern in Burrillville.

“Mom and Dad lived on Diamond Hill Road, the route of the Autumnfest Parade, every year there were dynamites slowly cooking while friends and family came to watch the parade. They all knew there would be Mom’s dynamites and a hot cup of coffee to keep them warm while they enjoyed the parade.” – Therese T. Dixon, Burrillville.

“Together the departments, staff and residents have been making dynamites for many events. They are always a favorite at our annual Christmas bazaar. We believe that our dynamites are the best in town.” – Lynne Leroux and Michelle Marcotte, The Friendly Home, Woonsocket.

“I have five children who are always hungry and, as far as I know, who haven’t complained in the consumption department. The fact is not much is left over after a meal (of dynamites).” – A.J. Grenier, Pawtucket.

“My dynamite sauce can also be incorporated into the best five-alarm chili you ever tasted. Just add a few simple ingredients and voila … chili. If I win, I’ll tell you how!” – Brian Tryhubczak, Woonsocket
