Museum of Work and Culture / Slater Mill Living History Museum

Museum of Work & Culture

This interactive museum presents the compelling and touching story of the French Canadians who left the farms of Quebec for the factories of New England. Illustrating a remarkable cultural preservation story of faith, language and customs, the exhibits recreate the unique Woonsocket labor story of the rise of the Independent Textile Union which grew to dominate every aspect of city life.

Woonsocket's residents and immigrant arrivals. Walking into the shop floor of a textile mill, on the front porch of a three-family apartment house, sitting in church, at a school desk, and in the union hall, you will find yourself immersed in the everyday lives of the working class in New England from the pre-World War era to the present.

1890 The Woonsocket Machine & Press Company at 533 Second Avenue. Construction of brick factory in the 1890s showing workers on scaffolds

Slater Mill Living History Museum

The Transformation of America from a quiet farming society into an industrial giant changed the way people worked, how and where they lived, even what they did in their spare time. Your visit to the place where that transformation began– Slater Mill

on the Blackstone River in Pawtucket, Rhode Island-will bring to life the experiences of the men, women and children of the early 19th century New England. See how they toiled in the earliest factories. Talk with skilled interpreters as they operate water powered machines, cultivate a historically correct garden and prepare meals over an open fire. The Slater Mill experience takes your mind and spirit far from the present day. You’ll leave with a new and personal understanding of the human side of the American Industrial revolution.
